I love making side dishes containing potatoes because they perfectly complement main courses such as chicken or meats. Potatoes make an excellent addition, and Nevas Potatoes are one of my absolute favorites.

The first time I tried Nevas Potatoes was at Chesapeake’s. I remember ordering their smoked salmon along with sides like Baked Spinach Maria and Nevas Potatoes. I loved that lunch, but it was the Nevas Potatoes that really caught my attention. I decided to ask the waiter for the recipe, and to my delight, he shared the exact ingredients and directions with me.

The recipe for Nevas Potatoes is quite similar to mashed potatoes, with the addition of cheese on top and a few other ingredients. This makes it incredibly easy to recreate at home whenever you crave a creamy and delicious potato side dish.

Nevas Potatoes is a side dish that is served in many restaurants, I personally explored it for the first time at Chesapeake’s, It’s a super creamy mashed potato made with russet potatoes and some other ingredient such as heavy cream and butter, which makes this side dish different from regular mashed potatoes which is the cheese on top and baked on the oven. This recipe is super simple and doesn’t require any hard techniques, Plus, it’s easy to customize with your favorite ingredients and flavors.

  • A large pot
  • A colander
  • A potato masher or electric hand mixer
  • A large mixing bowl
  • A wooden spoon or spatula

How to Make Nevas Potatoes Recipe?

Step 1:

Start by peeling the russet potatoes and cutting them into chunks. Aim for uniform pieces to ensure even cooking.

Step 2:

Place the potato chunks in a large pot and fill them with cold water until the potatoes are fully submerged. Add a pinch of salt to the water, which helps to season the potatoes as they cook. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer and let the potatoes cook until they become so soft, about 15-20 minutes.

Step 3:

Once the potatoes are tender, drain them in a colander to remove all the water. Let the potatoes sit in the colander for a minute.

Step 4:

Return the drained potatoes to the pot or transfer them to a large mixing bowl. Add the butter, minced garlic, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Using a potato masher, mash the potatoes until they turn so smooth and creamy.

Step 5:

Gradually pour in the heavy cream and whole milk, continuing to mash the potatoes until you reach your desired consistency. Some people prefer their mashed potatoes thicker, while others like them a bit more fluid. And add some salt and pepper.

Step 6:

Transfer the mashed potatoes to a baking dish. Sprinkle your favorite cheese generously over the top of the mashed potatoes. Cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend of cheeses work well for this step. Place the baking dish in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake for 10 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and turned a golden brown color. and Enjoy it alone or with your main dish.
